Progressive discipline

What does “progressive discipline” mean?

Progressive discipline is a graduated sequence of corrective steps (typically warning, written warning, final warning, termination) applied before discharge for performance or conduct.

California does not require it. Employers adopt it because a documented sequence makes the eventual decision look like policy rather than a reaction, and because it gives employees a genuine chance to correct course.

The risk is self-inflicted. A handbook that promises a sequence the business does not actually follow creates a documented gap between policy and practice.
