Reasonable accommodation

What does “reasonable accommodation” mean?

A reasonable accommodation is a change to a job or workplace that enables a qualified employee with a disability to perform the essential functions of their role, unless it would impose undue hardship on the employer.

The obligation is triggered by the employer's awareness of a possible need, not by a formal request in particular words. An employee who mentions a medical restriction has usually put the employer on notice.

Accommodation is also not limited to physical adjustments. Modified schedules, reassignment and leave can all be accommodations.
